June 16, 2016 by LORIE A BROWN, R.N., M.N., J.D. 1 Comment

Understandably, the public is fearful that allowing APRNs to fill the role usually reserved by physicians would reduce the quality of care administered to veterans, or worse, put veterans at risk by placing their health … [Read more...]

How Location Affects Nurses Across the United States

June 2, 2016 by LORIE A BROWN, R.N., M.N., J.D. 6 Comments

In such a demanding career as nursing, I’m sure you’ve wondered how the difficulties you face compare to others in the industry. John S. Kiernan’s recent article 2016’s Best and Worst States for Nurses on Wallethub.com just might have the answer. Recently, an L.P.N. in Indiana decided to access the license of an R.N. to get a better job for herself.  Holly Whyde had been working as the director of nursing at Kindred Transitional Care and Rehabillitation in Columbus, Indiana for over a year.  She had stolen the nursing license number of Holly Aumick, a registered nurse. Whyde went so far as to hack into the system of the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency to change Ms. Aumick’s license on line to her own address.  She also obtained … [Read more...]

As they say, the only things certain are death and taxes.  But now there is a third thing: change!   Oddly, “change is constant” in that is happening in and around us at all times.  Every cell in … [Read more...]

Nurses With Criminal Issues

April 21, 2016 by LORIE A BROWN, R.N., M.N., J.D.

Kathy Lynch and Karen Dunning, nurse practitioners and owners of Kouts Health Care Clinic, were accused of illegally issuing weight loss drugs to their patients and 27 counts of felony charges were filed against them.  Because of the multiple felony charges regarding prescribing practices, the Indiana State Board of Nursing placed their licenses on emergency suspension.  Both had prescribed Phentramine, a schedule IV controlled substance and Phendimetrazine, a schedule III controlled … [Read more...]
