CHANGE, CHANGE, CHANGE!

May 12, 2016 by LORIE A BROWN, R.N., M.N., J.D. 2 Comments

After moving into our new building this week, I realized how rooted I have been in my patterns and my environment.Ā  I had been in the same office for 17 years.Ā  Although the move was simple; emotionally and physically I still feel a little out of place.Ā  That’s what inspired me to write this article. As they say, the only things certain are death and taxes.Ā  But now there is a third thing: change!Ā Ā  Oddly, ā€œchange is constantā€ in that is happening in and around us at all times.Ā  Every cell in … [Read more...]

Nurses With Criminal Issues

April 21, 2016 by LORIE A BROWN, R.N., M.N., J.D.

Kathy Lynch and Karen Dunning, nurse practitioners and owners of Kouts Health Care Clinic, were accused of illegally issuing weight loss drugs to their patients and 27 counts of felony charges were filed against them.Ā  Because of the multiple felony charges regarding prescribing practices, the Indiana State Board of Nursing placed their licenses on emergency suspension.Ā  Both had prescribed Phentramine, a schedule IV controlled substance and Phendimetrazine, a schedule III controlled … [Read more...]

You Can Get Another Job, But You Can’t Get Another License

There are two recent cases in which nurses sued their respective employers and received a substantial verdict.Ā  It’s a shame that it had to come to this and that nurses had to resort to litigation.Ā  It is difficult … [Read more...]

March 31, 2016 by LORIE A BROWN, R.N., M.N., J.D. 1 Comment

Here’s your checkoff list to become empowered in your profession: Create empowering beliefs Your beliefs create your results.Ā  To paraphrase Henry Ford’s observation: ā€œIf you think you can, you can … if you think you can’t, you can’t!Ā  Either way, you’re right.ā€Ā  I would prefer to be right on the side of ā€œI think I can.ā€Ā  If you’re blaming things on not enough staff, no support from management, not enough time to complete the tasks and such, that’s exactly what you are … [Read more...]

Medical Malpractice Claims Against Nurses

March 10, 2016 by LORIE A BROWN, R.N., M.N., J.D. Leave a Comment

The Nurses Service Organization (NSO) has released its 2015 claims report.Ā  NSO collects data every year including claims against nurses, their areas of practice and how the claim is resolved. Of 549 claims against nurses last year that were closed, 88.5% involved RN’s while 11.5% involved LPN’s.Ā  This is interesting because this is almost the same ratio of the number of practicing RNs to LPNs.Ā  NSO paid almost an astounding $90.4-million in malpractice claims against nurses. Ā But the average … [Read more...]
